MLB: Dodgers add LHP Adam Kolarek, option RHP Andre Jackson

The Los Angeles Dodgers selected the contract of left-hander Adam Kolarek from Triple-A Oklahoma City and optioned right-hander Andre Jackson.

In an additional move, the Dodgers moved outfielder Trayce Thompson to the 60-day injured list in order to make room on the 40-man roster for Kolarek.

Kolarek, 34, returns to the Dodgers for the first time since pitching for the club from 2019-20. He was 0-3 with a 2.18 ERA at Oklahoma City this season after signing with the club in December. In 170 career major league relief appearances he is 11-4 with a 3.77 ERA for the Tampa Bay Rays (2017-19), Dodgers and Oakland Athletics (2021-22).

Jackson was just recalled Saturday and pitched three scoreless innings against the Philadelphia Phillies to earn his second three-inning save of the season. He was returned to Triple-A as the Dodgers look for more innings coverage during a planned bullpen game Sunday against the Phillies.

Jackson, 27, has a 6.62 ERA over seven relief appearances this season and is 0-1 with a 4.15 ERA in 14 career relief appearances for the Dodgers over the past three seasons.

Thompson, 32, has been on the IL since June 3 with an oblique injury. He was batting .155 with five home runs and 14 RBIs over 36 games.

According to the Orange County Register, Los Angeles right-hander Alex Reyes underwent a second shoulder surgery and will not pitch this season. An All-Star closer with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2021, Reyes did not pitch last season while having shoulder surgery.

Reyes, 28, signed a $1.1 million deal with the Dodgers as he recovered before further shoulder damage was found.

MLB: Corbin Carroll fuels Diamondbacks past tumbling Tigers

Corbin Carroll had three hits and scored twice, including the go-ahead run during a four-run, ninth-inning rally, lifting the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks to a 7-5 win over the reeling Detroit Tigers on Sunday.

Christian Walker doubled twice, scored a run and knocked in another for Arizona, which has won five straight and 11 of its last 13 games.

Starter Zac Gallen gave up five runs and 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings. Kevin Ginkel (3-0) pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the win and Scott McGough collected his second save.

Zach McKinstry hit a two-run homer for the Tigers, who have lost nine in a row.

Arizona’s Emmanuel Rivera singled with one out in the ninth against Jason Foley (2-2) and Ketel Marte drew a walk. Carroll then ripped a single to bring in Rivera and trim the deficit to 5-4.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. flied out before Walker smacked a 1-2 pitch for a double. Marte scored on the double and Carroll came home when left fielder Kerry Carpenter bobbled the ball, making it 6-5 Diamondbacks. Geraldo Perdomo then knocked in Walker with a single.

Pinch-hitter Andy Ibanez led off the bottom of the inning with a triple and Carpenter drew a one-out walk. McGough then replaced Andrew Chafin, struck out Javier Baez and induced Nick Maton’s groundout.

Will Vest opened the game for Detroit, pitching a scoreless inning. Joey Wentz went the next 4 1/3 innings and gave up one hit — Pavin Smith’s two-run homer — while striking out four.

The Tigers got the early jump on Gallen. Carpenter and Baez had back-to-back two-out singles and Maton smacked a ground-rule double to score Carpenter.

Arizona took a 2-1 lead in the second. Evan Longoria walked before Smith homered to left center.

Detroit tied it in the third. Spencer Torkelson hit a one-out double and moved to third on a Carpenter single. Baez drove home Torkelson with a sacrifice fly.

The Tigers took a 5-2 lead in the fourth. Miguel Cabrera reached on a single and scored on Jake Marisnick’s two-out double. McKinstry followed with a homer to right center.

Carroll had a one-out double in the eighth. He then stole third and scored on Gurriel’s groundout to make it 5-3.

  • NAS: Martin Truex Jr. takes checkered flag at Sonoma for fourth time

NAS: Martin Truex Jr. takes checkered flag at Sonoma for fourth time

What a difference a year has made for Martin Truex Jr. at Sonoma.

Truex passed Chase Elliott shortly after a late restart and won for the fourth time in Northern California’s wine country, grabbing the checkers in the NASCAR Cup Series’ Toyota/Save Mart 350 on Sunday in Sonoma, Calif.

After Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin brought out a caution with 19 laps remaining at Sonoma Raceway, Truex restarted his No. 19 Toyota inside the top four with 15 laps to go.

Truex maneuvered past leader Elliott, on older tires, and snaked his way around the 12-turn road course to find victory for the third time in the past five races there after finishing 26th a year ago.

“Hats off to my team,” said Truex, who led a race-high 51 laps. “To be so bad here last year and to come back and do that with the same car basically is really unbelievable.

“This is why we do it. This is why we go through years we had like last year. You just keep fighting and never give up on it. You always believe in each other. We haven’t changed anything on our team other than parts and pieces. It’s through a lot of hard work by a lot of people.”

His four wins trail only Jeff Gordon’s five for the most all-time at Sonoma.

It was the Mayetta, N.J., native’s 33rd Cup triumph and fourth win in 17 starts at Sonoma.

The win was Truex’s second of 2023 and first since his victory at Dover Motor Speedway on May 1.

“I tried really hard there at the end to keep Martin honest,” runner-up Kyle Busch said. “I’d beat him a little on a lap then I’d mess up. Then he’d beat me by a little more on the next lap.”

Joey Logano and Chris Buescher finished third and fourth, respectively.

Following a one-race suspension for intentionally wrecking Denny Hamlin in the Coca-Cola 600, Elliott came in fifth.

In his final race in his home state of California, Kevin Harvick brought his No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford home in 11th.

Harvick’s start — his 806th in the series — moved him ahead of Gordon and into ninth place among all-time drivers.

After securing his first-ever pole position at the 2.385-mile track, Hamlin took off in his No. 11 Toyota and won the first stage’s bonus points at Lap 25 by 2.987 seconds over Truex.

Hamlin paced all 25 laps in the caution-free segment, which stayed green and didn’t bunch the field under a rule used by NASCAR at its road courses.

However, Truex made a pass on Lap 34 and left his stablemate, only to lose the point when most of the field pitted with five laps left in Stage 2 during the 110-lap race’s first caution.

Under green, Busch went on to win the stage — his second segment win this season and first at Sonoma — with Logano behind him at the halfway point.

  • MLS: Franck Boli’s goal lifts Timbers past FC Dallas

MLS: Franck Boli’s goal lifts Timbers past FC Dallas

Franck Boli scored his fourth goal of the season late in the first half and the Portland Timbers went on to a 1-0 win over visiting FC Dallas on Sunday night.

Evander, who is now tied with Boli for the team goal-scoring lead, served in the assist on a sequence that was enough to snap a four-match winless streak.

Boli’s goal was only the Timbers’ second in their last five games, but on this occasion, they perhaps deserved more. Portland (5-7-5, 20 points) outshot Dallas 14-5 overall and 8-2 in terms of efforts on target.

Martin Paes saved seven of those Timbers shots on goal for FCD (7-6-5, 26 points), which lost back-to-back away matches for the first time this season.

The visitors also lost striker Jesus Jimenez at halftime to an apparent leg injury, in a game in which attacking midfielders Sebastian Lletget and Paul Arriola were also unavailable.

And they were defeated despite two replay reviews in their favor — the first reversing a very early penalty kick awarded to the Timbers, and the second overturning a red card shown to center back Gabriel Jesus.

Portland were very clear aggressors in the opening 15 minutes, only to be thwarted Paes’ excellent denials of Juan Mosquera in the ninth minute and Evander in the 11th.

But the Timbers would eventually take a deserved lead in the 35th when Evander took a pass in midfield and was afforded space to move forward down the left.

He then cut back and curled a cross toward the penalty spot. That’s where Boli met the ball, running at full speed to create space between himself and Dallas’ two center backs and power a header past Paes.

The Timbers sat deeper after halftime but looked more likely to score a potential second goal.

Paes continued to shine, with his best save of the night coming in the 60th minute when he sprawled low and left push away Santiago Moreno’s effort from inside the box.

Portland ‘keeper David Bingham was not as busy, though he reacted well at his near post in second-half stoppage time to deny Facundo Quignon a late leveler.

  • MLS: Galaxy score late to gain 1-1 tie vs. St. Louis City

MLS: Galaxy score late to gain 1-1 tie vs. St. Louis City

The Los Angeles Galaxy struck late to emerge with a 1-1 draw and salvage a point in the standings in their first-ever meeting against host St. Louis City on Sunday.

Daniel Aguirre scored for the Galaxy in the 85th minute after a slick centering pass from Douglas Costa. The goal countered a St. Louis City score in the 68th minute on a sideways flick from Niko Gioacchini.

With the tie, the Galaxy (3-9-4, 13 points) have now earned points in consecutive games for the first time since three consecutive tied games from March 11-25.

St. Louis City (9-5-2, 29 points) have one goal in their past two games (0-1-1) after scoring 10 goals in their previous three, all of which were victories.

Los Angeles’ Calegari had a pair of chances early to get his team on the scoreboard. In the third minute, he took the ball just past midfield and brought it inside the box, but his attempt rolled wide left. Five minutes later, he drove down the right side but his shot was stopped by St. Louis City goalkeeper Roman Burki.

St. Louis picked up the tempo as the half progressed but couldn’t break through for a goal. In the 12th minute, midfielder Jared Stroud missed when he tried to connect with a teammate inside the box and moments later, he tried a volley from the penalty area only to see the ball go wide right.

Indiana Vassilev had a chance to get the home side on the board in the 39th minute off a corner when he took a short pass along the side and sent it inside for a header, but the shot went wide.

Gioacchini struck with an impressive finish to give St. Louis a 1-0 lead. Vassilev sent a cross to Gioacchini streaking towards the goal area and the forward connected with his left foot to send the ball into the top corner of the net.

St. Louis nearly doubled its lead four minutes later. Vassilev drove up the field, maintaining possession to get to the spot before sending a shot on target that was saved by Galaxy goalkeeper Jonathan Bond.

Aguirre brough the Galaxy even in the 85th minute, helping Los Angeles earn a victory at Real Salt Lake and Sunday’s tie on the road over the past two games.

Burki made four saves for St. Louis City, while Bond made five for the Galaxy.

  • ATP: Novak Djokovic wins French Open for record 23rd Grand Slam title

ATP: Novak Djokovic wins French Open for record 23rd Grand Slam title

Novak Djokovic captured his record-setting 23rd Grand Slam title Sunday with a 7-6 (1), 6-3, 7-5 victory over Casper Ruud in the French Open final in Paris.

The third-seeded Serbian broke a tie with Spanish rival Rafael Nadal for the most major singles championships by a men’s player and tied Serena Williams for the most by any player in the Open Era.

“Four biggest tournaments that we have in the history in our sport of tennis,” Djokovic said. “Every single player dreams of being in this stage and winning the trophy at least once in their career. I am beyond fortunate in my life to win 23 times, Grand Slams. It’s an incredible feeling.”

At the age of 36 years and 20 days, Djokovic also eclipsed Nadal as the oldest French Open champion with his third victory at Roland Garros (2016, 2021). He also became the first man to win all four Grand Slam tournaments at least three times.

Nadal, who is out for the season after hip surgery, tipped his cap to Djokovic on social media.

“Many congrats on this amazing achievement,” Nadal tweeted. “23 is a number that just a few years back was impossible to think about, and you made it! Enjoy it with your family and team!”

With the win, Djokovic also reclaimed the No. 1 ranking in the world from Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.

Djokovic overcame 5-4 deficits in both the first and third sets against the fourth-seeded Ruud before eliminating the 24-year-old Norwegian in 3 hours and 13 minutes and celebrating with a backward fall onto the red clay.

Djokovic, who won his first Grand Slam title at the 2008 Australian Open, improved to 5-0 against Ruud. He struck 11 aces and won 80 percent (59 of 74) of the points behind his first serve and saved three of four break points.

Djokovic rallied from a 4-1 hole in the opening-set tiebreak. In six tiebreaks during the fortnight, he outscored his opponents 42-13 and made zero unforced errors.

Djokovic outhit Ruud with 52 winners and 32 unforced errors. Ruud, still looking for his first Grand Slam title, had 31 winners and the same number of unforced errors. He saved seven of 10 break points while losing in the final at Roland Garros for the second straight year.

“I think we should start with Novak. Another day, another record for you, and another day you rewrite tennis history,” Ruud told Djokovic during his on-court interview.

“It’s tough to explain how incredible it is and how good you are. What an inspiration you are to so many people around the world. Congratulations to you, to your team, and I know this probably tastes the best out of all. So congrats.”

One G.O.A.T. cheered on another Sunday, with NFL legend Tom Brady among those in the crowd at Court Philippe Chatrier.

  • MLS: Ryan Gauld lifts Whitecaps to draw with FC Cincinnati

MLS: Ryan Gauld lifts Whitecaps to draw with FC Cincinnati

Ryan Gauld scored on a penalty kick in the 89th minute as the host Vancouver Whitecaps rallied for a 1-1 draw with MLS-leading FC Cincinnati on Saturday night.

Gauld’s goal came just six minutes after Cincinnati’s Luciano Acosta broke a scoreless tie.

Cincinnati (12-1-4, 40 points) had a franchise-record six-game winning streak snapped, while the Whitecaps (5-5-7, 22 points) extended their unbeaten streak at home to nine matches (5-0-4).

Gauld, who scored on a penalty kick in the 88th minute last Saturday in a 1-1 tie with Sporting Kansas City, got another attempt after Cincinnati defender Matt Miazga tripped up Sergio Cordova just inside the top of the 18-yard box. Gauld blasted a left-footed shot into the lower right corner of the net, leaving goalkeeper Roman Celentano no chance.

Acosta came off the bench to open the scoring in the 83rd minute. He took a long through ball from Miazga at the top of the 18-yard box and lobbed a left-footed shot over Vancouver goalie Yohei Takaoka and into the far-side netting. It was Acosta’s team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Vancouver’s Brian White twice tried to lob shots over Celentano, but he put an attempt just wide of the right post in the 11th minute and launched one over the crossbar and into the netting atop the goal in the 79th.

    Both goalies made two saves.

Takaoka dropped to his knees to save a 20-yard shot by Dominique Badji in the 51st minute. He also smothered Brandon Vazquez’s attempt from the top right of the 6-yard box in the 12th minute.

In the 23rd minute, Celentano made a diving save on a shot from the right side of the penalty area by Vancouver’s Sergio Cordova after a through ball from Ryan Raposo. Celentano made an easy stop at the right post on a header by the Whitecaps’ Javain Brown in the 64th minute.

  • MLS: Earthquakes end years of futility by beating Union

MLS: Earthquakes end years of futility by beating Union

Miguel Trauco scored the tiebreaking goal and the San Jose Earthquakes defeated the visiting Philadelphia Union for the first time in nearly 10 years by registering a 2-1 victory on Saturday night.

Jeremy Ebobisse also scored for the Earthquakes (7-5-5, 26 points), who ended a seven-match winless streak (0-4-3) against Philadelphia. It was San Jose’s first win over the Union since a 1-0 home win on Sept. 8, 2013.

Damion Lowe scored the goal for Philadelphia (9-5-3, 30 points), which saw its nine-game unbeaten stretch (7-0-2) this season snapped. The streak matched the franchise mark set last season (2-0-7 from April 23 to June 26).

The Earthquakes are 6-0-2 at home this season, allowing just five goals. San Jose also is unbeaten in its last four overall matches (2-0-2).

San Jose goalkeeper Daniel made a hand save on a left-footed blast by Jack McGlynn in the 90th minute to prevent the Union from tying the score. Daniel had six saves.

Trauco gave San Jose a 2-1 lead in the 57th minute with a long left-footed blast from beyond the center of the box. The ball sailed into the top right corner of the net for Trauco’s second goal of the season.

Earlier, San Jose moved ahead in the eighth minute when Cade Cowell fed Ebobisse, who smacked a left-footed shot into the right corner of the net for his seventh goal of the season.

Nine minutes later, the Union tied the game on a corner kick. Kai Wagner’s long cross went directly to Lowe, who headed the ball and it tipped off the hand of Daniel en route to landing in the net. It was Lowe’s first goal of the season.

The Union had a 19-10 edge in shots and placed seven on target to San Jose’s two. Philadelphia goalie Andre Blake didn’t make any saves.

Philadelphia’s leading scorer, Julian Carranza (nine goals), failed to convert on two big opportunities.

In the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time, Jesus Bueno passed the ball to Carranza, who had an open net right in front of him. But Carranza kicked the ball over the crossbar to keep the score tied at 1.

In the 73rd minute, Carranza had a chance to knot the score at 2 when he attempted a point-blank header, but Daniel made the stop with his right knee.
